Irtiotto arjesta. Avoimin mielin kohti uusia vesiä. Aikaa runsaan vuoden verran saada uusia kokemuksia ja koota ajatuksia.

Herääminen uuteen aamuun veneessä, mikä ei liiku, tuntuu oudolta. Pikainen silmäys ympärillemme avaa silmämme, ja ymmärrämme heti, miksi niin monet purjehtijat suuntaavat veneensä kohti Hortaa. Useimmat Atlantin ylittäjät haluavat tulla tähän legendaariseen satamaan, minne ensimmäiset pitkänmatkan purjehtijat saapuivat jo yli 100 vuotta sitten. Satama on suojainen ja tupaten täynnä tähän aikaan vuodesta. Veneitä on parhaimmillaan viisikin toistensa kylkiin kiinnittyneinä. Tunnelma on välitön ja lämmin. Täällä tapaamme jälleen kerran vanhoja tuttuja.

Peter's Sport Cafe on keskeinen paikka, missä purjehtijat kohtaavat lasin ääressä. Kokoonnummekin kaksi kertaa skandinaavisissa merkeissä isolla porukalla. Mukana ovat tutut veneet skandinaavisesta netistä. Osallistumisprosentti on sata.
Horta on paikka , missä voisi viipyä vaikka kuinka pitkään. Ilmassa on haikeutta.
Hyvästelemme monet purjehtijat lähtiessämme. Mieleemme jää erityisesti englantilaisen S/Y Avocetten sympaattinen ja toverillinen kippari Chris. Ehkä tapaamme hänet Itämerellä lähivuosina.
Hortasta suuntaamme veneen keulan 150 mailin päässä sijaitsevalle Sao Miguelin saarelle, minne purjehdimme yön yli. Sieltä saamme edulliset lennot, kun käymme piipahtamassa Suomessa.

Waking up for a new day in Horta sounds strange. The boat is not any more moving but instead stays stable by the side of a french boat. Looking around makes it very easy to understand why so many sailors every year at this time choose Horta for their destination when crossing the Atlantic. This harbour has already more than 100 years been a favourite port for cruising people and it offers on the other hand a safe marina on the other hand a fantastic atmosphire. This feeling is caused by those hundreds of sailors and boats which are tight towed together in harbour. The friendship and kindness among sailors is unbelievable. Everybody has a similar experience behind and now it is time to relax and make acguitance with other sailors. Legendary Peters`s Sport Cafe is the corner where all the sailors head and take their drinks. We for sure also enjoy of being present in Sport Cafe. We meet old friends and also 2 times have a dinner with the Scandinavian sailors which participated the Scandinavian net daily during the crossing.
As most of the sailors we also paint our logo on the wall of the waterbraker. This way we hope to get fair winds on our sailing forward.
We were pretty lucky because we only got some minor damages on our sailing to the Azores ( VHF-antenna was broken, tricolor did not light any more, head sails got some damage in gusts ). Some other boats got major problems for.ex ( masts were broken, the rigging damages, steering mechanism were not working, in one boat the wind generator fell down from the mizzen mast, nobody was hurt ).
One day we take a tour to the vulcano named Caldera. Our french friends Daniel and Noel has a car and we go together to see the miracle which is awaiting us. We hike around the vulcano crater 2,5 hours and are fascinated looking 400 meters down to the crater all the time. On the other side we can see nearly the whole island and the Atlantic ocean. This was a good day also from the point of motion. After having been nearly 4 weeks out at sea being on the hard we felt very good.
We could stay in Horta and the Azores actually for a very long time. We have so nice time with other sailors that we really wanted to stay. Perhaps it takes years before we meet these lovely people again perhaps some of them never. We shake hands once more with Chris the skipper of the english S/Y Avocette and hope to see him probably in the Baltic sea. This is cruising at its best, meeting new people all the time and seeing grate places which a normal tourist very seldom would visit.
We head next to Sao Miguel which is located some 150 miles from Horta. We sail there over night. We pick up cheap flights to Finland for a short visit.
