Sao Miguel

Ponta Delgada
10.6 - 22.6

Purjehduksemme Faialilta Sao Miguelille sujuu leppoisasti. Purjehdimme yön yli tuon n. 150 mailin matkan.

21.6 on suuren purjehduskilpailun AZAB:n (Azores and Back) startti Ponta Delgadasta Falmouthiin.
Aikataulumme on tiukka, sillä työt kutsuvat kapteenia jo heinäkuun loppupuolella. Tarkoituksemme on purjehtia täältä suorinta tietä Englannin kanaaliin, joskin tuulet määräävät tahdin. Arvioimme saapuvamme kanaalin tuntumaan 10-12 vuorokauden kuluttua. Mahdollisesti jatkamme purjehdusta suoraan kohti Pohjanmerta.
Sähköpostiosoite veneeseemme on OF7187@sailmail.com.
Sailing to Sao Miguel was pleasant and during this around 150 miles long voyage we first time after Saint-Martin had open wind. We made good progress and arrived to Ponta Delgada next day during daylight. Sao Miguel like all the islands in Azores has very much to offer for tourists. This time we anyway did not have possibility to explore this island but instead we took a flight to Helsinki where captains son Jaakko was going to get married with his pride Heini.
The ceremony was held in the church of Johannes and after that guests gathered together for party. In photo Heini and Jaakko just after marriage.
Hanna visits also her summer cottage in Hämeenkyrö and also meets her children in Tampere.
We return to Sao Miguel after short visit to Finland. We very soon meet our old good french friends Noel and Daniel from S/Y Nurges. We are invited to their boat in the evening and we really have good time together. We got really cheap flights to Finland and because of plenty of international flights this island seems to be the one where many boats change their grew members etc. Our plan is to leave Sao Miguel as soon as possible and after the normal preparations concerning the boat and provisionings. Veikko has to start working in Finland at the end of July and this is why we have some time pressure. We head to the English channel where we hope to enter during 10-12 days. We might go on sailing as fas as the North Sea but of course we make the final decision concerning this after having taken in consideration the existing weather conditions.
21.06.2011 is a special day because this is Veikko`s 60 th birthday. We are gathered in the cockpit of Canace with french sailors Noel and Daniel and Elisabeth and Benny from Sweden. Also the just married couple Heini and Jaakko are present because they are having their honey moon in the Azores. We take our sparkling wines and listen the traditional Happy Birthdays song also in french. Congratulations Veikko.
21.06.2011 is also the day when the around 50 sailing boats from different countries with shorthanded crews have their start from Ponta Delgada to Falmouth. This race named AZAB ( Azores and back ) is held every 4 th year. We can see this fleet sailing out to the Atlantic in fresh NE breeze. We will follow them the next day.
We will write again this blog as soon as we are in marina somewhere. Anyway we try to send daily the positions report so it is possible still follow our route via internet: www.shiptrak.org
then our call sign which is OF7187 and then view.
Our e-mail address at sea is: of7187@sailmail.com
