Antigua

Navakka NE/E-tuuli saattelee meidät matkaan, kun lähdemme Deshaiesista kohti Antiguaa. Reivaamme vahvasti, sillä tuuli ja aallot tulevat hieman vastaisesti Atlantilta. Tuuliperäsin ohjaa pitkästä aikaa, mikä onkin hyvä, sillä aallot lyövät kannelle ja vesi lentää istuinlaatikkoon asti. Pysymme kuitenkin kuivina sprayhoodin alla.

Hyvästä tuulesta johtuen taitamme tämän etapin (42 mailia) alle kuudessa tunnissa.
Laskiessamme purjeita luonnonmuovaamien Herculeksen pylväiden lähellä English Harbourin edustalla, jolla ajaa kylkeemme ja tuttu mies nostaa kätensä tervehdykseen. Kukas muu kuin jo La Gomeralta tuttu englantilainen Chris toivottaa meidät tevetulleiksi ja neuvoo hyvän ankkuripaikan hiekkarannan tuntumasta.

Chrisin kanssa vietämekin aikaa riutoilla snorklaten ja hän kutsuu meidät merenkulun ja rommin perinteitä vaalivan yhteisön, Royal Naval Tot Club of Antigua and Barbuda, kokoontumiseen. Kokoonnumme 50 hengen joukolla juhlavassa tilassa Nelson's Dockyardilla, muodostamme piirin ja kuuntelemme tarinoita meritaisteluista ja voitoista. Lopuksi kohotamme lasimme ja juomme maljan pohjaan. Ilta vierähtää rattoisasti tässä arvokkaassa seurassa.

Shirley Hights on näköalapaikka, mistä  aukeaa upea näkymä  kauas saaren yli. Sunnuntai-iltaisin siellä vieteään grillijuhlaa musiikin tahdittamana.

Kiipeämme jyrkkää ja kiemurtelevaa polkua aina huipulle saakka musiikin tahdittamina. Perillä steelband soittaa rumpujaan ja meno on todella mahtavaa pimenevässä illassa. Alastulo pimeää polkua pitkin otsalamppujen valossa on myös jännittävä kokemus.

Tuuli muuttaa suuntaa yllättäen ja joudumme vaihtamaan ankkuripaikkaa. Siirrymme Falmouth Harbourin edustalle ankkuriin. Antigualla alkaa pian vuotuinen purjehdustapahtuma Antigua Racing Week, jolloin maailman suurimmat "purjeveneet" ja loistokkaat klassiset puupurret saapuvat kilpailemaan tänne omissa luokissaan.

Suurimmat näkemämme megajahdit ovat yli 80-metrisiä. Niiden suuruutta on vaikea kuvailla ja kuvata.

Ehkä parhaimman kuvan niiden suuruudesta saa, kun katselee puosuntuolissa      keikkuvaa miehistön jäsentä.

Täälläkin tapaamme vanhoja ja uusia tuttuja. Englantilaisen S/Y Alexinan miehistön tapasimme viimeksi La Gomeralla. Uutena tuttavuutena Matti ja Bimbo, jotka ovat purjehtineet veneellään osan vuodesta Karibialla jo yli 20 vuoden ajan.

On myös aika sanoa näkemiin. Susie ja Paul jäävät Antigualle lähtiessämme kohti St. Bartsia. Paul lähtee ylittämään yksin Atlanttia Antigualta kuun lopussa päämääränään Kanarian saaret ja Puerto de Mogan. Sovimme, että pidämme yhteyttä merellä SSB:n välityksellä.

The pretty strong NE-E wind which is a little bit coming on nose makes us to reef a lot when leaving from Deshaies to Antigua. The wind is blowing straight from the Atlantic and the waves try to climb over deck every now and then. First time after arriving to Grenade we now use our Aries windvane again. This is why we can find shelter behind the sprayhood and we feel fine. We sail well and do this 42 miles " leg " under 6 hours.

When arriving to English harbour we immediately meet a dinghy which approached us. Our good friend from La Gomera Chris came to say hello and adviced us to find a good place for anchoring near by the splendid beach. We had nice time with Chris and we went to snorkle to the reefs with him. Chris invited us to the meeting of an accociation named Royal Naval Tot Club Antigua and Barbuda. This 20 years old club which has 350 members from 17 different nationalities was having " ritual " again in fine restaurant in Nelson`s Dockyard and about 50 participants had with them water and rum glasses. After some informative affairs and reading of sea history everybody took their rum with one " drink" which is the tradition. We enjoyed being with these people also later in the evening.

There are again many sailing boats in the bay which we already know and for a long time since La Gomera we meet also the crew of english S/Y Alexina.

Shirley Hights is a great place where from the scenery over Antiguas different parts is magnificent. On Sunday evenings they arrange a Barbegue at the top of this hill and the music of steel band is fantastic.

We climb up to the hill and hear the music all the time. Finally after the party we return down the hill again and this time with torches we can find out way to the beach.

The wind changes its direction and make us to move to Falmouth harbour. This is also a fine place to stay and now we are even more near the center of the big sailing event which is near the corner. During the Antigua sailing weeks megayachts and fantastic old classic yachts for. ex race in their own classes. We can see yachts which are longer than 80 meters and it is difficult to explain how big these yachts as a matter of fact are.

In Antigua we also meet 2 finnish sailors Matti and Bimbo who have sailed part of the year in the Caribbean islands already more than 20 years.

It is also time to say good bye. We  meet once more Susie and Paul. Paul is going to sail with his boat alone from Antigua to Puerto de Mogan in Canary Islands. We are going to keep contact to each others during sailing via SSB-radio.
