St-Barth

Gustavia 14. - 19.4

Jätämme Antiguan emmekä jää seuraamaan Antiguan purjehdusviikkoa. Seuraava päämärämme on 84 mailin päässä sijaitseva St-Barth.

Alun kohtalainen tuuli kuihtuu lähes kokonaan ja matka taittuu hitaasti ensin purjeilla, sitten koneella. Viimeiset 10 mailia purjehdimme taas voimistuvassa tuulessa. Jo kaukaa mereltä voi nähdä Gustavian punakattoiset talot.

Etsiessämme ankkuripaikkaa pääkaupungin Gustavian edessä olevalta täydeltä lahdelta meille heilutetaan läheisestä veneestä. Ranskalainen Max suomalaisen 60-jalkaisen Swanin (S/Y Alegria) kannelta neuvoo meidät poijuun, mikä on vapaana. Helppo juttu! Hetkessä olemme kiinnittyneinä poijuun ja kaupan päällisiksi Max soutaa veneemme kylkeen ja tuo meille tuoreet salaatit ja muut vihannekset. Maxkin on omistanut aikanaan Joshuan ja purjehtinut sillä paljon.

St-Barth on kuulunut aikanaan Ruotsille. Pohjoismaisia piirteitä voi olla enemmänkin, mutta me huomaamme ainakin punaiset peltikatot ja kissan, joka on niin kotoisen näköinen.

Saari on jo pitkään kuulunut Ranskalle. Ennen se oli tunnettu mm. köyhyydestään, veneenrakennustaidoistaan ja salakuljetuksesta. Nykyisin St-Barthin edustalla on loistojahteja. Saari onkin varakkaiden ja kuuluisien ihmisten suosima paikka. Yhtään filmitähteä emme kuitenkaan tällä kerralla nähneet.

Me viihdymme hyvin ankkurissa todella puhtaan ja kirkkaan veden ympäröiminä. Teemme snorklausmatkan Shell Beachille, mistä Hanna kerää valtavat määrät vaaleanpunaisia simpukankuoria.

Tanskalaisveneen S/Y Awarenessin miehistö Gerda ja John tulevat tervehtimään meitä, tutut jo Lissabonista saakka.

Täällä näemme myös kolmannen sisarveneen tällä matkalla, kun meitä lähelle ankkuroi ranskalaisperheen S/Y Skiathos.

Tutustumme Maxin vaimoon Dacileneen ja poikaan Kikoon. Heidän kanssaan vierailemme paikallisen lauluporukan harjoituksissa. Lämmin tunnelma ja mukavia ihmisiä!

Ihastumme St-Barthin pienuuteen ja rauhallisuuteen. Saamme osaksemme vilpitöntä ystävällisyyttä Maxilta ja hän antaa meille hyviä neuvoja Atlantin ylitystä varten. Tämän kokeneen purjehtijan neuvoja kannattaa kuunnella, onhan hänellä takanaan mm. yli 30 Atlantin ylitystä.

We leave Antigua before sunset and do not stay to watch the Antigua Racing week. Our next destination is St-Barth which is situated some 84 miles NW of Antigua. The moderate wind which gave us good start is soon just a memory and we make progress very slowly. Finally during the night we start the engine and make sure that we arrive in St-Barth during the next day. Finally we reach the wind again and the last miles to the port are enjoyable.

The bay of Gustavia on the W coast of St-Barth is crowded and when looking a suitable place for anchoring we were contacted from a 60-feet Swan. Max the captain of this splendid french yacht S/Y Alegria told us that he has a free extra boyage which we can use. It was not really a big job to be safe and sound in the bay of Gustavia, thanks for Max. This friendly french sailor amazed us the second time when he took his dinghy beside Canace and gave us salades, tomatoes etc. vegetables. Max has also owned a Joshua and sailed a lot with her.

St-Barth used to belong to Sweden but since long time ago this fantastic island has been property of France. Still we can find some scandinavian traits at least concerning the architecture of St-Barth.

In olden days this island was known of its poverty, skill of boatbuilding and smuggling. Nowadays out of St-Barth as well in the harbour you can find really big and luxorios yachts and St-Barth is today an island where really rich people gather and some of them live on island. This time we did not anyway manage to meet a filmstar in the island.

We enjoy being in St-Barth and the possibility to swim and snorkle from boat when ever we like. We make a tour by dinghy to the Shell beach for snorkling. Hanna also picks up a big amount of shell from the beach.

Danish John and Gerda from S/Y Awareness came to visit us. This nice couple we met already in Portugal last autumn. Also they are heading to Europe like many other boats during this period.

We liked St-Barth very much and found this island to be very calm, easy and beautiful. Max was very kind to us and we had also possibility to meet Maxs wife Dacilene and son Kiko. With them we met local people when participating one evening a happening when they all were training by singing, playing gitar, violin and other instruments. Max gives us also advice concerning crossing Atlantic. It is good reason to listen Max who is a very experienced sailor and has crossed The Atlantic Ocean more than 30 times and also sailed much else where.
