Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe, paikalliselta nimeltään Karukera, Kauniiden vesien saari, kuuluu Ranskalle. Guadeloupille kuuluu myös muita ympäröiviä saaria, mm. Marie Galante, Les Saintes ja La Desirade.

Vierailemme kahdessa paikassa, ensin Les Saintesin saarilla ja sitten Guadeloupin luoteisosassa sijaitsevassa Deshaiesissa.

Les Saintes 29.3 - 2.4

Les Saintes on luontevasti reittimme varrella ja näitä saaria monet ovat kehuneet. Tätä saariryhmää lähestyttäessä on navigoitava tarkasti johtuen riutoista.

Ankkuroimme 10 metriin pääsaarella Terre d'en Hautilla sijaitsevan kaupungin Bourg des Saintesin edustalle. Vesi on niin kirkasta, että pohja näkyy.

Kaupunki on hyvin hoidettu idylli ja sijaitsee suojaisan lahden helmassa. Täällä huomaa eurooppalaisen vaikutuksen esim. jätehuollossa.

Nousemme korkealle vuorelle, missä sijaitsee Napoleonin linnoitus museoineen. Museossa saa hyvin käsityksen alueen merihistoriasta ja linnoitukselta aukeaa huikea näkymä saaren eri osiin.

Pyrähdämme jollalla naapurisaarelle Cabritille (Ilet à Cabrit) ja snorklailemme riuttojen tuntumassa. Pelikaani seuraa meitä uteliaana rantakiveltä.

Les Saintesissa tapaamme jälleen kerran tutut ruotsalasiveneet ja englantilaisen Altairin. Olemme sopineet S/Y Altairin miehistön ja erään toisen englantilaisveneen kanssa yhteisestä purjehduksesta Guadeloupin luoteisosassa sijaitsevalle Deshaiesin lahdelle. Lähtö viivästyy odottamatta, sillä sähköinen ankkurivinssimme ei inahdakaan. Kapteeni kiskoo 40 metriä kettinkiä ylös paljain käsin ja lopulta pääsemme matkaan.

Edessämme on hieno purjehdus. Matkalla valokuvaamme toistemme veneitä.

Deshaies 2.4 - 5.4

Heräämme uuteen aamun Deshaiesin lahdella. Täällä voi hyvin lähteä tutkimaan vedenalaista maailmaa suoraan veneestä. Kilpikonnien liikkeitä on mukava seurata.

Tutustuminen pieneen ja rauhalliseen kylään on helppoa. Kaikki löytyy kirkon ja rannan välistä. Kylän keskellä sijaitseva kirkko on kookospalmujen ympäröimä.

Luonnontieteellisessä puutarhassa näemme paljon erilaisia trooppisia kasveja ja puita sekä Karibian alueelta että muualta maailmasta. Mielenkiintoista ja väririkasta!

Moni purjehtija pysähtyy Deshaiesissa, koska se on sijaintinsa puolesta erinomainen pohjoisesta saavuttaessa ja pohjoiseen lähdettäessä.

Kirjaamme itsemme ulos täältä ja jatkamme kohti 42 mailin päässä sijaitsevaa Antiguaa.

Guadeloupe, Karukera by its original name belongs to France. Many islands surrounding Guadeloupe such as Marie Galante, Les Saintes and La Desirade are part of Guadeloupe. We visit Les Saintes and Deshaies situated in the NW corner of Guadeloupe.

Les Saintes is situated well on our route to north. Many sailors have recommended us this island. When approaching these islands you have to navigate carefully because of the reefs. We anchor in 10 meters deep water and still can easily see the bottom. In front of us is Bourg des Saintes named small town situated in the main island Terre d`en Hautille. Bourg des Saintes is a pleasant and very idyllic small town by a sheltered bay. Here we can already see the european influence. We climb up to a high hill where the castle of Napoleon with museum is situated. By visiting the museum we get some idea of the sea history of this area and from this corner we can admire a magnificent scenery around Les Saintes.

We take a tour by dinghy to the neighboring island named Ilet à Cabrit. Here we snorkle by the reefs and a pelican is watching us near by.

We meet again our swedish friends and as well the crew of english vessel S/Y Altair. Our plan is to sail together with S/Y Altair and another english boat to Deshaies. Our anchor windlass gives us extra work because it does not start at all. This electrical problem we solve during our sailing but in harbour we instead lift 40 meters of anchor chain by hand and there is no need for more exercise for this day. We have a fine sailing and during it we take photos from each others boats.

We wake up for a new day in the bay of Deshaies. Here we can jump into the water direct from boat and explore the life of sea and for sure we find again our friends turtles. Visiting this small village is a great pleasure and the atmosphire is relaxed. A church surrounded by palmtrees is the center of this place where everything is around the corner. In the Bothanical Garden we see trees, flowers and birds from different parts of The Caribean Islands as well from some other parts of the world.

In Deshaies we make the formalities and head to Antigua situated 42 miles north of Deshaies. Deshaies is a popular place to anchor for those arriving from the north or instead heading to the north as we do.
