Tänne Barbadokselle halusimme tulla ihan ensimmäiseksi, vaikka tuuli vei meitä paremmin kohti pohjoisempia Länsi-Intian saaria. Tänne on vaivalloista purjehtia muilta saarilta vallitsevista tuulista johtuen, sillä Barbados sijaitsee itäisimpänä saarena kaukana muista saarista.
Sen sijaan suuret risteilijät vierailevat saarella päivittäin ja useimmat turistit tulevat saarelle lentäen. Barbados on kuuluisa rommistaan, sokeristaan, upeista rannoistaan, letkeästä menosta, ystävällisyydestään.. Se on ollut itsenäinen vuodesta 1966. Bridgetown, saaren pääkaupunki, sijaitsee jokisuistossa. Sen palvelut ovat lähellä meitä. Ihmisten ystävällisyyden kohtaamme päivittäin kaupoissa, ravintoloissa, kadulla.. Valtaosa saaren väestöstä on väriltään ruskean eri sekoituksia. Saaren pääkieli on englanti. Saarta kutsutaankin Pikku Englanniksi.
Kun jollan moottori ei millään käynnisty, apuun rientävät kalastajaveljekset Rodney ja Rudolph ystävänsä Keithin kanssa veneellään. Puolen tunnin korjausoperaation jälkeen moottori käynnistyy ja monttöörit kutsutaan veneelle kiitokseksi avusta.
Nämä uudet tuttavamme haluavat näyttää meille omaa saartaan. Parin päivän päästä lähdemmekin saarikierrokselle.
Kierrämme saarta ja pysähdymme katselemaan maisemia ja ottamaan valokuvia. Useiden pysähdysten tarkoituksena on esitellä meille paikallista luontoa: syötäviä kasveja ja marjoja, lintuja, veden eläviä..
Saamme nähdä huikeita paikkoja etenkin saaren pohjois- ja itäosissa. Nuo osat ovatkin vastakohtana saaren länsiosille, mitkä ovat tuulen suojassa.
Maailmankuulu surffajien kokoontumispaikka Bathsheba on juuri saaren itärannalla, missä valtavat Atlantin aallot luovat erinomaiset edellytykset tälle lajille.
Päivä päätetään yhteiseen illalliseen minkä jälkeen meidät saatetaan kalastajaveneellä omaan veneeseen.
Euroopan puolella tapaamamme useat venekunnat ovat hekin valinneet Atlantin ylityksen päämääräkseen Barbadoksen. Ilahdumme eräänä aamuna, kun ranskalaistuttaviemme Martinen ja Andre'n S/Y Pydge on ankkurissa aivan lähellämme.
He tulevat illalla veneellemme, istumme iltaa ja vaihdamme kuulumisia.
Seuraavana iltana he kutsuvat meidät illalliselle rannalla sijaitsevaan Lobster Alive- nimiseen ravintolaan. Tunnelma on lämmin, vaikka merivesi on kastellutkin Hannan jollalla rantauduttaessa. (Vaatteet menee vaihtoon ja puhelin mykäksi.)
Pikkuhiljaa ajatuksemme suuntautuvat kohti uusia saaria. Seuraavana lienee vuorossa runsaan 100 mailin päässä sijaitseva Grenada, jonne lähdemme sunnuntaina. Ennen lähtöä hoidamme jälleen tullimuodollisuudet. Maksamme yhteensä 100 Barbadoksen dollaria (n.50 Amerikan dollaria) koko Barbadoksen visiitistä ja perimätiedon mukaan hyvä tapa edellyttää, että toimitamme pari viinapulloa viranomaisille.
Barbados was our destination from the very beginning although the wind would have given us better course to the Caribbean islands lying more in north. Because of the location of Barbados it is wise to pick it up after crossing the Atlantic. Later it would have been tacking against prevailing winds and also current against you.
Big ships take tourists here daily and Barbados is also destination of numerous airplanes taking tourists to this lovely island. Barbados is famous for its rum, sugar, beaches, friendly people and easy going lifestyle.
Barbados has been independent since 1966 and english is official language here. Barbados is called " the little England ". Bridgetown by the river is the capital of Barbados and there you can do all the shopping etc.
When we could not start the outboard motor of our dinghy 2 local fishermen ( Rudolph and Rodney and their friend Keith ) gave their hand and assisted us for getting motor run again. We thank these friendly guys and invite them to Canace for a drink. These very gentle local men promise to show us their island by their car later.
2 days later we have this sightseeing round the island mentioned above. We are shown numerous fine places and we stop the car often to take pictures etc. We get also explanation of nature: birds, fishes, flowers, trees etc. and have possibility to taste for ex. berries from trees ( you would not dare to do this by yourself ). In the northern and eastern part of Barbados the nature is different because we are on the windy side of the island. We are close to fantastic places by the Atlantic waves. In the eastern coast there is Bathsheba, a world wide well known surfing center. Because of the big Atlantic waves and sandy beaches this area has become popular among surfing people already long time ago. After the long day we have dinner with our new friends and then we are taken back to Canace in the evening.
Every now and then we see some boats which we have seen in La Gomera for ex. One morning we are very glad to see near by us a french sailing boat S/Y Pydge and Martine and André sailing with this 40 ft aluminium boat. We met this charming couple in La Gomera and seeing them here was a big pleasure. We have good time together in Canace and next evening Martine and André invite us to dinner in the beach restaurant named Lobster Alive. In this restaurant also the music is live. We have again good time together and delicious food and wine. When entering to the beach by dinghy we were unlucky to get a big wave on board. Hanna was washed by the waves and as a consequence went to back to Canace for changing clothes. Hannas waterproof mobile phone did not work anymore as it should have done ( the sea water does not seem to be the best medicine for this kind of technology ).
It is again time to start sailing. We head next to Grenada. Before leaving we do again the formalities (immigration, customs and the port authority ). The costs of the hole visit in Barbados is 100 Barbados dollars ( = 50 US-dollars ) and we are adviced to take 2 liters brandy to the authorities when leaving.
