Olemme nyt saarella, jonne alunalkujaankin olimme päättäneet tulla. Niin monet purjehtijat ovat kehuneet Gomeraa meille ja onhan tämä historiallisestikin merkittävä paikka Kolumbusta ajatellen. Kolumbus lähti täältä länttä kohti 6. syyskuuta vuonna 1492.
Tänne saapuessamme marina oli täysi ja on pysynyt täytenä lähes koko ajan johtuen siitä, että moni vene lähtee juuri täältä kohti Kap Verdeä tai suoraan Atlantin ylitykselle.
Ensimmäiset yöt vietämme lähellä sataman suuaukkoa ja tuulesta ja aallokosta johtuen vene keikkuu ja olo on epämukavaa. Vieressämme on englantilainen matkapursi S/Y Avocette of Portsmouth, jonka kapteeni vahtii veneidemme liikkeitä. Kapteeni Chris on todellinen merten herrasmies kuten miehistönsäkin.
Matalapaineiden reitit ovat olleet etelämpänä kuin tavallisesti ja vallitsevat tuuliolosuhteet ovat tästä syystä muuttuneet epäedullisiksi. Samasta syystä puolitoista viikkoa sitten Las Palmasista lähteneet ARC-veneet ovat kärsineet tuulettomuudesta.
Pienen odotuksen jälkeen saamme loistavan paikan marinasta ja tässä pysymme, kunnes köydet irtoavat.
Olemme viettäneet aikaa tutustumalla saareen. Täällä on upeat mahdollisuudet vaeltaa vuorilla. Teemme myös rengasmatkan saaren ympäri linja-autolla ja laivalla. Gomera on kauttaaltaan vuoristoinen. Tiet ovat serpenttiiniteitä ja usein tie sukeltaa tunneliin. Karun eteläpuolen vastakohtana saaren länsipuolelta ja pohjoisesta löytyy vehreitä laaksoja ja saaren keskiosassa sijaitsee Garajonayn kansallispuisto, joka on saanut nimensä Garajonayn kallioista (1484 m). Kansallispuisto on Unescon maailmanperintöluettelon kohde.
Jäämme pois linja-autosta Vallehermosossa saarta kiertäessämme. Olemme paikassa, mikä on maisemiltaan henkeäsalpaava ja itsellä on epätodellinen olotila. Tunne siitä, että jos et tietäisi missä olet, voisit kuvitella olevasi missä maailmankolkassa tahansa.
San Sebastian, missä olemme viimeisen viikon viettäneet, on pieni vuorten ympäröimä kaupunki. Sen kiertämiseen ei tarvita kulkuneuvoja. Jalkapatikalla pääsee parhaiten joka paikkaan. Paikalliset asukkaat tuntevat toinen toisensa ja muukalaiseenkin suhtaudutaan ystävällisesti on sitten kyseessä tanskalainen hippi tai suomalainen purjehtija.
Vene tuntuu olevan valmiina, vain muutamia ostoksia on tekemättä (vihannekset, hedelmät yms.). Lähdön lähestyminen on aistittavissa.
When arriving in La Gomera the marina was very crowded and has been like that all the time. Many sailors have chosen this island as a last port before sailing to Cape Verde or direct over the Atlantic. Also Kolumbus started his voyage from La Gomera 06.09.1492 and that has made this island so famous and popular.
We were first in a pontoon where the S-SW wind could blow and so it really did. After one " lively " night in swell by the pontoon we got an ideal berth from the inner part of the marina. By our side is an english boat S/Y Avocette of Portsmouth. The captain of this boat Chris is watching during late hours his boat as we also are. The swell in harbour is ackward due to the strong wind and even thunder. We find Chris to be a gentleman of the seas as also his crew.
The route of low pressures has been more to the south than normal and this is why the wind has been sometimes very strong here and blowing from S-SW. On the other hand far more south there has been at the same time very week winds and for.ex many of the ARC boats have suffered from the lack of wind.
We have been looking around the island by bus and small ferry. There are high mountains all over the island and the dry southern part of the island is an opposite to the very green northern part of the island. We have time enough to enjoy the relaxing feeling in Vallehermosa where no one is hurrying anywhere and the landscape is fascinating.
San Sebastian where we are is small town and you do not need a vehicle for going around. The feeling also here is something which you do not meet in big touristic areas. All the people seem to know each others and the attitude to visitors is open and very friendly.
The boat is now ready for a longer sailing we just wait the right moment. Many other boats are also waiting the green light for departure and are willing to let the just now blowing S-SW wind turn to favourable direction.
