8.7 - 15.7

Guernsey jää jo kolmannen kerran taaksemme. Voimakas myötätuuli ja tempoilevat vuorovesivirrat imaisevat meidät mukaansa. Kurssi on suunnattu Alderneyn ja Cap de la Haguen välimaastoon. Saamme heti 8-9 solmun nopeuden tuulen kuljettaessa meitä suotuisasti virran avustuksella. Lähestyessämme Alderneytä ihanuus loppuu ja olemme keskellä käsittämätöntä aaltojen myllerrystä (Alderney Race). Vene poukkoilee voimakkaasti eri suuntiin.

Cherbourgin tietämillä meitä tarkkaillaan. Pian kylkeemme liimautuu kumivene ja kolme tullivirkailijaa nousee veneeseen. Ystävällinen, mutta varsin perusteellinen tupatarkastus ei tuota tulosta.

Ensimmäisen merellä vietetyn yön jälkeen aamun jo sarastaessa messityttö herättää kapteenin huutamalla:"Puomi on poikki!"

Näky on karu. Isopurjeen puomi retkottaa purjeen varassa. Onneksi ei tullut henkilövahinkoja.

Aallokosta johtuen purjeen laskeminen ja puomin sitominen ei ole helppoa. Saamme kuitenkin tilanteen hallintaan ja jatkamme purjehdusta ensin mesaanilla ja keulapurjeella. Myöhemmin samana päivänä käynnistämme moottorin ja päätämme mennä Belgian Oostendeen korjauttamaan puomia ja tarkistuttamaan purjeen.

Seuraavana iltana kiinnitymme The North Sea Royal Yacht-klubin laituriin. Saamme nopeasti apua: puomi korjataan Suomeen purjehdusta varten ja purje käydään läpi. Erikoiskiitokset Soete Technical Services BVBA:lle!

Vaikka vaadittavat työt saadaan valmiiksi kahdessa päivässä, olemme nyt tuulten vankina. Voimakas N/NW-tuuli pitää lähes kaikki veneet laiturissa.

Täällä törmäämme ensimmäisen kerran turvallisuusasioihin. Meitä on varoiteltu varkaista, varsinkin Karibialla, mutta omalle kohdallemme ei ole sattunut mitään. Vieressä olevaan amerikkalaisveneeseen hiipii yöllä kaksi varasta, jotka kuitenkin miehistöön kuuluva Jerry nappaa kiinni ja toimittaa poliisin huostaan.

12.7 saamme ilouutisen Suomesta. Hannan ensimmäinen lapsenlapsi, Jarnan ja Timon pikkuprinsessa on syntynyt. Näin messitytöstä tulee kertaheitolla messimummo.

Edessämme on vielä n. 1000 mailin purjehdus Suomeen. Tarvitsemme todella suotuisia tuulia päästäksemme aikataulun puitteissa perille.

We leave St Peter Port in Guernsey already the third time. Strong current and wind behind us give us immediately full speed and we easily make 8-9 knots. When approaching Alderney sea gets more confused and we find it very difficult to make progress. The boat is violently moving in the pretty big sea which is as well steep and coming from all directions. We are sailing in the area which has bad reputation because of the strong tidal streams surrounding The Channel Islands. In the chart is marked Alderney Race which means very bad sea state sometimes. There is also in the chart mark of heavy overfalls so as to warn sailors of this special phenomenom. Our route goes towards The Dover Strait so we are to pass the place where we do not like to be.

Later when passing by Cherbourg we are under control. Soon a dinghy from a customs ship approaches and 3 customs officers jump in Canace. The make a very thorough inspection but of course the result is Zero.

After the first night at sea Hanna wakes the captain by shouting " boom was broken ". And so it was. The reefed mainsail was keeping together 2 pieces of our mainsail boom. The most important thing is that nobody was hurt. The sea was confused also at that moment and we were sailing downwind in winds gusting up to 30 knots or so. We managed to take the mainsail down and fix the boom by several ropes. We went on sailing by the mizzen and genoa for several hours. We started the engine in the afternoon because the wind was getting down and so as to make progress. We finally entered Oostende in Belgium. We knew this port and the Royal North Sea Yacht Club and hoped to get things organised there. We managed to get good help quickly and got our boom under repair. Also checking our mainsail was important and we also got the sail under control and repair soon. Special thank for the company named Soete Technical Services BVAB.

We get news from Finland. Hannas first grandchild, baby princess, was born on the 12 th of july. We take sparkling wine in Canace with this "new " grandmother.

Even if the boats in this marina are behind gates 2 thieves found they way to an american 50-feet boat just alongside us. Thanks for Jerry who was sleeping by the companionway and was awake. Jerry could capture these thieves and soon the police was present. This was the first time during our one year sailing when things like this happen.

After having got the boom and sails repaired and installed back we could have gone on. Now the very bad weather with strong headwinds was keeping us in port. We still have some 1000 m miles to go to Finland so we hope to be able to leave the port soon.
